Basic Allergy Knowledge

An allergy is an inflammatory response after a person’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances in the environment.

Approximately, there is 8% of Hong Kong people suffer from food allergy, different types of skin allergy such as eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis. Allergy is a disorder that affects many people nowadays.

A lot of people thought their immune system is not strong enough thus getting an allergy; or thinking skin allergy is contagious. However, these are all some kinds of misunderstanding.

Besides bringing inconvenience and disturbance to daily lives, allergy can also be fatal therefore we should not overlook this disorder.

 When an allergic person encounters an allergen, his or her immune system will create antibodies against it and the antibodies will trigger the body to create powerful chemical which causes the allergic reaction. These include skin rashes, wheezing, vomiting, eyes watering or nose running. For serious cases, anaphylaxis or swelling of the gastrointestinal tract may occur, which can be deadly.
